Episode 2: Hidemitsu Masui

Welcome back to Super Awesome Artist Show! This is our second episode AND the first bilingual show. Welcome, those who are viewing it in Japanese. I am Pinc Bullet, the host of the show. Super Awesome Artist Show features talented artists from various media.
Tonight’s guest is a very talented illustrator from Tokyo, Japan, Hidemitsu Masui. Welcome, Hidemitsu-san!

P: Will you please introduce yourself?

H: Hi everyone. My name is Hidemitsu Masui. I draw digital illustrations. I have been working on children’s books and participated in several art shows. I am currently seeking a job by the way. I got to know Pinc Bullet on a social networking site. It’s hard to believe we’ve been talking back and forth for two years now. I have a part-time non art related job right now, so I feel much pressure to be called an artist.

P: The first impression I usually get from your illustrations is splashes of bright and striking colors. Do you have particular way in choosing colors and deciding the color schemes?

H: I simply like such color schemes. Must be my personality, lol.
I do spend enough time on color adjustment until I’m completely satisfied. Digital art has that advantage.
But even before that, I try to give meanings to the color schemes based on shadow and light. I feel that the effects you can create with dark and light are significant. By applying shade, we can create dimensions. We can also express the time, like morning, day time or nighttime in the world you are depicting. Like how high the sun is. How you use your color schemes can inject so much information into the illustration and help tell stories.
I sometimes lower the brightness on my monitor to the point where you can barely see the picture. I’ve made this a habit after I heard a Japanese comedian talk about Akira Kurosawa’s works on a radio show once. He said, “Express darkness by not lighting the scene at all. That is his realism.” Objects further away would blur in the atmosphere. Lines may have more details but blend into the background. Darken the shadows to the point where you barely see the details you’ve already drawn. I have learned that it is not always necessary to be overly kind to the viewers’ eyes while setting up a scene by controlling colors.

P: Snacks, candies and other food items make frequent appearances in your illustrations. Does food as a theme have a special meaning to you? Also, are you a sweet snack person or salty snack person? I’m definitely a salty snack person. (munch munch…)

H: In films, meals and eating food are said to have a meaning of life and human existence, based on the fact that all living things eat. I use that idea in my art. Not just candies but all things in our lifestyles are designs that have been refined and survived throughout the years. I have appreciation for such beautiful designs. Candies and sweets especially are designed to be bite-sizes and compact, and I find them fun to use in my illustrations. Because many of them are designed to attract women, their designs are cute. Only sweets are that kitschy and cute, and edible, too! That is why I’m drawn to them.
I too am a salty snack person. Potato chips are a must especially when watching movies.
I met this jewelry designer, “tomogara”-san at Design Festa (a bi-annual international art and design event in Tokyo). She makes jewelry of realistic sweets and snacks. I may have been a bit pushy but we talked about our love for sweets then.

P: What influences animation has on your art? What are your favorite anime or movie?

H: I’m drawn to the “stylized world” and “process of creation” of animation. I first developed my attraction to animation watching Miyazaki’s works.
When I was in junior high school, I spent all my allowance to buy a series of books called “Ghibli the Art Series”. Each book from the series shows the production process for every Ghibli film. I used to try copying the wonderful image boards (water color concept art) from the books Miyazaki has painted.
My illustrations are also based on the idea of taking scenes out of stories. I am definitely influenced by those image boards. My favorite Miyazaki films are “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Spirited Away”. I enjoy the unkindness of these stories as well as the feeling they give like you are dreaming a good dream.
I’ve recently begun watching the oldies and the masterpieces. My favorite is “Back to the Future”. I learned about building story structures and layering multiple storylines from that movie. I watched backwards actually, like 3 first, 2 second and 1 last. Like “Memento” in a strange way. Lol. But it challenged my mystery solving skills and imagination.

P: How do you create illustrations that look like freezing the moments in time?

H: I try to draw my characters as animated as I can. I also enjoy the feel of tricking eyes, like it’s a still image but its characters seem like they would start moving any moment. Kind of like trick art. I’ve already mentioned about taking critical scenes out of stories. At the same time, I also want to capture and depict the most heightened moments of the character’s emotion. This naturally leads to freezing the moments.
Not to compare my art to Cezanne’s, but I try to draw the essence of the subjects by selecting the right angles and moments, like Paul Cezanne painted his apples with each apple depicted from its best angle.

P: Where do you get inspiration and how do you generate ideas and stories? Can you tell us your secret solutions for when you have a hard time coming up with new ideas? We won’t tell. : )

H: My ideas come from life. They come from the worlds in films, animation and novels created by professional creators. However, most of them come from the experience, people and sceneries I encounter by just hanging out, walking around or traveling. I take photos of them when possible.
Unable to generate ideas, that means your sensitivity level is temporarily down. I’d rest or go out and have fun. When your “heart becomes rich” again, interesting ideas may come to you. When there is not enough time to do all that, I’d dig up my old notes and photographs. I believe that the things that you have kept or found interesting do hold special meanings in some way or another. You can get motivated only by things you relate to.

P: You’ve participated in events like Design Festa. What do you gain from interacting with people?

H: I show my art on my web site. I don’t usually hear what people think about my art directly. By participating in the events, I get to see people’s immediate reaction and hear their spontaneous impressions. At Yokohama Virgin Festa (similar to Design Festa) in May, a family told me they would like to see one of my illustrations to be made into animation. Now I’m forced to consider this as a future project. The events are where I get to see myself from the third person perspective. The best things I gain from these events are the meaning of what I do as an artist and motivation to keep doing what I do.

P: Please tell us about Shikisai.

H: Shikisai was a group show held in Tokyo in November 2010. “Let’s create a fun event” was our goal. Creative friends got together and showed animated films, art shows and live paint shows everyone could participate. It was our first group show and although there are improvements to be made, the goal was reached for sure.

P: Are you working on or planning any other projects other than Shikisai for future?

H: It’s not a big project but I have been doing portraits of customers at these events as merchandise and performance. I think keeping my customers satisfied is very important in general, not just at the events. I would like to continue doing portraits for a long time.
In the future, I would want to do something that will give me a new sensation. Something that doesn’t necessarily use high technology. Something out of everyday life yet you can feel it only when you go there and you can go outside of reality while you are there. I know it is quite abstract still. I’m not sure if it is going to be illustrations or animation. I will figure it out in time.
